On 6 November, the Stockholm Climate Security Hub through the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) will host a virtual workshop on ‘Climate, Oceans and Security’.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate changes are likely to create unprecedented conditions with ‘increased temperatures (virtually certain), greater upper ocean stratification (very likely), further acidification (virtually certain), oxygen decline (medium confidence)’. The IPCC also reports that ‘marine heatwaves (very high confidence) and extreme El Niño and La Niña events (medium confidence) are projected to become more frequent’ (IPCC 2019). Moreover, by 2050 historically rare extreme sea level events are projected to become more frequent (at least once per year) in many locations.
About the workshop
The workshop will convene key stakeholders and experts in a participatory setup where the aim will be to bring forward existing evidence, flag remaining knowledge gaps, and discuss adaptation strategies that different countries and regions are putting in place to deal with the challenges posed by ocean (in)security.
The focus will be on exploring knowledge needs and adaptation strategies in two topics: (a) the territorial consequences from sea level rise, and (b) food security in light of saltwater intrusion and changes in ocean temperatures.
